Playlist – April 2023

by Teodor Costăchioiu

Welcome to my new monthly playlist dedicated to (re)discovering 80s and 90s music!

Since I abandoned Spotify and switched to Tidal, I’ve found a lot of new music released by bands I listened to in the ’80s, including remixes, covers, and remasterings of classic albums. Since then, I’ve been thinking of publishing a monthly selection of songs I discover in the hope that you’ll find here some new tracks to add to your playlist, especially since I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s into retro music.

As Easter is approaching and it’s time for parties and family get-togethers, I decided to publish the first edition of my list today, the one for April. I’d really appreciate it if you could leave me a few lines in the comments about whether you like it or not.

I put links to YouTube Music or YouTube everywhere because everyone has access to them. I recommend listening to the tracks on Tidal, though; there’s a huge difference in quality.

➡️ Today’s playlist starts with Mflex Sounds, a Hungarian artist who debuted in 2011 with tracks that evoke the Italo disco style of the 80s and 90s with hints of synthwave, synthpop, and trance. So far, Mflex Sounds has released over 200 tracks. Obviously, not all of them are worth the attention, and their only pity is that, at some point, the pieces start to look alike. However, if you like the Italo-disco style, with rhythm and dances that make spiders fall out of their webs, it’s worth giving them a chance.

I particularly like Love Message and In My Arms from the album Love Message, as well as Love in the rain from the album Italo Essentials vol.2.

➡️ DJ Bobo has a new 2022 album, Evolut30n. I like Daga Daga, but there are at least four other tracks that deserve attention.

➡️ Thomas Anders released the album Cosmic in 2021, an album that is very close to the Modern Talking style. Some of my favorite songs include Today, Tonight, Together, and Heaven No.9. In addition to this album we also have a fresh single from 2023, The Journey of Life.

➡️ Wet Wet Wet have released their 2021 album The Journey as well as a live album, available only on Tidal, The Journey Out of Lockdown.

➡️ Cutting Crew released Ransomed Healed Restored Forgiven in 2020, available on Tidal. On YouTube, you will only find Mixes / Extended / Live from 2022.

➡️ Simply Red released two fresh singles: Better With You and Shades 22.

➡️ Pet Shop Boys released Hotspot in 2020. My favorite track is Only The Dark. They also have a single out in 2022 with Soft Cell called Purple Zone.

➡️ Ten Sharp has two albums out in 2020: Early Days and … And More.

➡️ F.R. David has a new single out in 2022, Time Is Not Mine.

➡️ Richard Marx has released a new album, Songwriter, in 2020.

➡️ Alphaville has released the album Eternally Yours together with Deutsches Filmorchester Babelsberg.

➡️ Chris Norman has released the album Just A Man in 2021.

➡️ New Kids on the Block are coming back in 2022 and are trying to surprise us with the single Bring Back The Time (feat. Salt-N-Pepa, Rick Astley & En Vogue).
